Behind the Board: Sizing Wall Protection From Where Stray Darts Actually Land
Cover a zone roughly 1200 mm wide by 1300 mm tall centred on the bullseye, and put a mat on the floor for the strip below it. A standard EVA surround only reaches about 120-150 mm past the board's edge, which catches the near misses and nothing beyond them. The scatter is taller than it is wide, so a square backboard wastes material in the corners and runs out of height where you need it.

A surround is not wall protection. It's edge protection, and it stops about 120 to 150 mm past the board's rim, which handles the darts that were nearly in and none of the ones that weren't.
What the wall actually needs is a rectangle roughly 1200 mm wide and 1300 mm tall, centred on the bullseye. That covers the zone where the overwhelming majority of off-board darts land, and it's noticeably taller than it is wide because release-timing errors throw darts up and down while alignment errors throw them left and right — and timing errors are far more common.
Below the board is a separate problem with a separate answer. Every bounce-out ends up on the floor, and no wall product helps. That's a mat.

The geometry you're protecting
All the sizing follows from four fixed dimensions, so it's worth having them in front of you.
The scoring area is 340 mm across, measured from the outer edge of the double ring on one side to the outer edge on the other — so 170 mm of radius from the bull centre. The board itself is about 451 mm overall, which puts the physical rim at roughly 226 mm of radius and leaves an unscored moat about 55 mm wide all the way round. Bull centre sits 1.73 m off the floor. The throw line is 2.37 m back, measured horizontally from the board face.
Stack those and the board's top edge lands at about 1.955 m and its bottom edge at about 1.505 m. A 1300 mm tall protected zone centred on the bull runs from 1.08 m to 2.38 m, which in a standard 2.4 m room means the top of your panel is nearly touching the ceiling. Measure before you order, because that's the constraint that bites, not the width.
Where the misses go
The table below describes the population of darts that leave the 340 mm scoring bed — not all darts, just the ones that got away. Most of those still land on the board, in the moat, and do no damage at all. It's the remainder that costs you plaster.
The share figures are bands rather than laboratory data. Tape a large sheet of plain card behind the board, play normally for a fortnight, and the holes will give you your own distribution, which is worth more than anyone else's.

A dart released a few milliseconds early or late leaves the hand on a different part of its arc, and that error expresses itself almost entirely as height at the board. Left-right error comes from alignment, which most players get roughly consistent long before they get their timing consistent.
That's why square backboards feel like they've got wasted corners and still let darts over the top. Portrait beats square at the same surface area.

Anything under 200 mm is a near-ring product, and near-ring products are the ones people buy when they think the job is done. The combination most homes end up wanting is a one-piece surround for the near ring plus a soft-faced panel behind everything for the two zones out from it. The surround handles the darts that skim the rim, the panel handles the ones that were never close, and neither is trying to do the other's job.
If you can only have one thing, make it the panel. A surround protects the wall you were never going to hit.
The floor takes more damage than the wall
Every bounce-out lands point-first from about 1.7 m onto whatever is below the board, usually somewhere between the skirting and 600 mm out from it. On laminate that's a dent. On softwood floorboards it's a hole. On carpet it's a pulled loop and a dart with a rolled tip.
It also wrecks points, which feeds straight back into the bounce-out rate. A dart that lands tip-first on tile comes back with a flattened apex, and a flattened apex bounces out again. That loop is the reason a board with no mat under it seems to get worse.
A purpose-made dart mat covers the throw line and the drop zone in one piece and is the cheapest thing on this page that changes anything. If you can't have one, an offcut of dense rubber matting a metre square does the same job for the drop zone.
Renting, and the no-drill problem
Free-standing frames solve this properly. A frame that carries the board, the surround and a backboard, and stands on the floor rather than hanging on the wall, leaves nothing behind when you move out and takes the structure-borne noise out of the party wall as a bonus.
The alternatives are worse than they look. Heavy-duty adhesive strips are not rated for the shock loading of a dart landing on a board, and a board that falls off the wall at 5 kg does more damage than a season of stray darts. Over-door brackets put the board at the wrong height unless the door happens to cooperate, and the door will move every time somebody walks through it.
If you must fix into the wall, the board bracket itself is one small screw and easy to make good. It's the backboard that needs four fixings, and that's the part worth putting on a frame instead.
Three ways people make it worse
A hard glossy panel behind the board is the most common mistake. Melamine-faced sheet, gloss-finished ply and anything similar reject the point entirely, so instead of a dart stopping in your protection it comes back off it with most of its speed intact and travels further than it would have off bare plaster. If the panel won't take a point, it isn't protection.
A surround mounted proud of the board face is the second. Surrounds are meant to sit flush with or slightly behind the playing surface. Sitting forward, the lip catches flights on incoming darts and knocks scoring darts out of the board, and it takes people months to work out why they've suddenly started losing darts on the 5 and the 20.
Screwing the board bracket directly into a party wall is the third. It costs you nothing to protect against and it's the single thing most likely to end your darts career by complaint. Pads behind the fixings, or a frame that touches the floor.
