Steel Tip vs Soft Tip: What Actually Changes, Down to the Gram

Steel-tip darts have a fixed or replaceable metal point and are stamped by barrel weight; soft-tip darts have a moulded plastic tip and are stamped by the mass of the complete dart. Steel goes into sisal only, soft goes into electronic segment holes only, and the two are not interchangeable without conversion points that add roughly 0.6-1.0 g to the front of the dart.

The physical difference is the point: steel-tip darts carry a hardened metal point that penetrates sisal fibre, soft-tip darts carry a moulded plastic tip that seats in a hole on an electronic board. That much is obvious from across a room.

The difference that costs people money is the weight convention. A steel-tip set stamped 22 g is telling you the mass of the barrel and its point. A soft-tip set stamped 22 g is telling you the mass of the whole dart including shaft, flight and tip. So the steel-tip barrel assembles to about 23.2 g in a typical build, while the soft-tip dart is already 22 g complete. Same printed number, roughly 1.2 g apart in the hand, and neither box mentions it.

Beyond that, most of what you've learned carries over. Grip, stance, throw and scoring arithmetic are the same. Board geometry is nearly the same — same height, different throw distance. The equipment is where the codes diverge and it's the only place you need to think carefully.

  1. The weight stamp is most of the argument

    Take it slowly, because this trips up experienced players.

    Steel-tip: the stamp covers the metal you hold. On a fixed-point dart the point is pressed permanently into the barrel and the stamped mass includes it. Shaft and flight are excluded from the stamp entirely, and between them they add 0.6-2.0 g depending on material and length.

    Soft-tip: the stamp covers everything, as supplied in the packet. Change the shaft and the number on the box stops being true. This is why soft-tip sets ship with short nylon shafts and slim flights — the manufacturer is working against a league weight ceiling and every tenth of a gram in the back end is a tenth they can't put in the barrel.

    The practical consequence: a soft-tip player crossing to steel should buy roughly one to two grams lighter than the number they're used to, not the same number. A steel player crossing to soft will find that the heaviest legal soft-tip dart in most leagues is lighter than their assembled steel dart, and there is no way to buy their way out of that.

  3. Can you throw these at that? The compatibility grid

    Short version: no, and the expensive mistake goes one direction. Throwing steel into an electronic board destroys segments, and segment sets are not cheap to replace.

    Before you throw anything at an electronic board, confirm there is no metal forward of the barrel — that single check prevents the only genuinely costly mistake in either code.

    There's one more compatibility trap that isn't about tips. Electronic boards have a shorter effective playing diameter than a regulation sisal board on some models, and the segments have their own geometry. A dart that clips the wire on a sisal board and drops may register on a machine, or may not register at all. That's a scoring difference, not an equipment one, but it changes what practice on one board teaches you about the other.

  4. Conversion points and the mass nobody quotes

    If your barrel has a 2BA thread at the front — which many do, and many don't — you can screw in a conversion point and use the same barrel in both codes. The barrel is the expensive part, so this is genuinely worth knowing. What nobody quotes is what it does to the mass and the balance.

    Add the net-change figure to your assembled steel-tip mass before checking it against a soft-tip league cap — that quarter to half gram is what pushes borderline setups over.

    The other consideration is length. Conversion points are longer than the plastic tips fitted to purpose-built soft-tip darts, so a converted steel dart is usually longer overall than a native soft-tip dart of the same mass. If your league enforces the 168 mm length limit as well as the weight cap, measure before you turn up. Most don't check. The ones that do, check both.

  5. Scoring, and why the machine flatters you

    A machine reads the segment the tip is sitting in and adds the score. A human marker reads where the dart actually is. Those are not always the same thing.

    On an electronic board, a dart that lands half in the treble and half in the single occupies one hole, and that hole belongs to one segment. You get whatever the hole says. On sisal, the same dart is adjudicated by eye and by which side of the wire the point entered, and a dart resting against a wire can be called either way depending on who's looking.

    The bigger difference is bounce-outs. On sisal, a dart that hits a wire square usually deflects and drops, and scores nothing. On an electronic board, a dart that fails to seat in a hole falls out and, on most machines, scores nothing but also doesn't get flagged — you throw again or you don't, depending on house rules. Machine leagues typically allow the dart to be rethrown; steel-tip does not, and a bounced dart is simply gone.

    None of this makes one code easier. It does mean averages don't transfer cleanly, and a player who scores well on a machine should expect a dip on sisal that has nothing to do with their throw.

  6. Switching codes without rebuilding your throw

    • Move the throw line before you move anything else. Soft-tip is 69 mm further back, which is enough to change your sight picture and nothing to do with the darts.
    • Going soft to steel: drop 1-2 g off the printed number you're used to, so a habitual 20 g soft-tip player should try 18-19 g stamped steel barrels first.
    • Going steel to soft: your assembled mass is probably above the legal soft-tip cap. Accept a lighter dart rather than trying to find a heavy one.
    • Keep the same grip cut and the same barrel shape across codes if you can. Those are the variables that most affect release, and holding them constant makes the transition about geometry rather than feel.
    • Carry spare plastic tips. They break, and they break at the worst moment. A pack of 100 lives in the case and costs almost nothing.
    • Don't practise steel on a machine or soft on sisal to save setting up. The feedback is wrong in both directions and you'll learn the wrong lesson.
  7. Which code to learn on

    If your goal is competitive darts in the UK or Ireland, learn on steel. The league infrastructure is there, the geometry is the one used at every level above you, and the skills transfer downward to soft-tip easily.

    If you're in a market where machine leagues dominate the local scene, or if your board is going in a room where stray steel points into plaster would be a problem, soft-tip is a completely legitimate choice and the automatic scoring genuinely accelerates a beginner's arithmetic.

    The case for soft-tip that gets undersold: a machine will tell you your three-dart average without you having to work it out, every single leg, from your first week. Players who can see the number improve faster than players who can't. That's worth more to a beginner than any equipment decision on this page.

    The case against soft-tip that gets undersold: the weight ceiling is real and narrow. If you turn out to be a player who throws best at 24 g assembled, soft-tip cannot sell you that dart, and you will spend years slightly under-gunned without knowing why.
