Barrel Cuts Ranked by Grip Aggression: Knurl, Shark, Ring and Micro Under the Calipers
Grip cuts differ by two measurable things: how deep the groove is and how far apart the grooves sit. Depths run from 0.00 mm on a smooth barrel to around 0.45 mm on an aggressive shark cut, with pitch between 0.35 mm and 3.0 mm. Deeper and coarser means more hold and a dirtier release; shallower and finer means a cleaner release and less to hang on to.

Grip aggression comes down to two numbers a set of digital calipers can pull off a barrel in under a minute: cut depth and pitch. Depth is how far the groove sinks below the barrel's outer surface. Pitch is the centre-to-centre spacing between grooves. Everything a manufacturer calls aggressive, medium or subtle is one of those two numbers, or both.
Roughly: shallow and fine means the barrel releases cleanly and gives you very little to hold. Deep and coarse means the barrel holds hard, which is useful if your fingers slip and actively harmful if they don't, because the last thing a dart wants on release is your fingertip catching a groove edge.
The cuts that sell best are the ones in the middle. That is not a coincidence and it is not marketing — it's because most players need enough texture to locate the barrel by feel and not so much that release timing becomes a lottery.
Reading a cut instead of reading the label
Two barrels can both be sold as "shark grip" and be a long way apart. One might run 0.30 mm deep at 1.3 mm pitch — a firm but manageable hold. The other might run 0.45 mm at 1.0 mm pitch, which is a barrel that will not let go of a sweaty thumb. Same word on the packet, two different products.
You can approximate the reading in a shop without tools. Drag a fingernail slowly along the barrel. If you can feel individual grooves catching one at a time, the pitch is above about 1.0 mm. If it feels like a continuous rasp with no distinguishable steps, you're under 0.5 mm. Then press a nail into a groove and try to rock it sideways: if the nail seats and holds, depth is over about 0.25 mm; if it skates out, you're under.
The other thing worth doing is holding the barrel exactly as you throw and then letting your fingers go slack. On an over-aggressive cut you'll feel the barrel stay put for a fraction of a second before it drops. That hesitation is the release problem, made visible.
The grip matrix
Depth and pitch below are measured ranges across mainstream tungsten barrels. Aggression and release cleanliness are our scores on a 1-10 scale, where 10 aggression means maximum hold and 10 release means the barrel leaves the hand with no drag at all. The two are inversely related by design — nobody has solved that, and anybody claiming to has just picked a middle setting.

The hybrid row is the one worth pausing on. A barrel with a smooth or micro front section and a shark-cut rear is not a compromise, it's a design decision about where your fingers sit. Grip it in the smooth zone and it behaves like a smooth barrel. Grip it across the boundary and you get an inconsistent release, because two of your fingers are leaving at one rate and the third at another. Hybrid barrels punish an imprecise hand position more than any single-cut barrel does.

Cut in half and looked at end-on, these profiles are genuinely different shapes and that's what your fingertip is registering — not the depth number on its own but the shape of the edge it meets.

That asymmetry is the defining property of a shark cut and it's why it splits opinion. Pushed forward, your fingers ride the shallow ramp and slide off cleanly. Pulled back, they meet the steep face and lock. If your release involves any backward drag at all — a slight pull as the hand decelerates — a shark cut will hold on to the dart and change its exit angle. If your release is purely forward, it's the most secure grip you can buy.
Where on the barrel each cut earns its keep
Barrels are not uniformly gripped and shouldn't be. Where your fingers land is the only zone that needs texture, and everything outside it is either dead weight or a liability.
Front-hand players — index finger near the point, thumb behind it — do best on smooth or micro at the nose. Anything aggressive up front interferes with the finger that's doing the aiming, and because the front finger is usually the last to leave, a deep cut there is the most direct route to a hooked release.
Mid-hand players have the widest choice. Ring, dimple and scallop cuts all work in the middle third, and this is where the market concentrates because it's where most hands sit.
Rear-hand grips — three or four fingers well back down the barrel — are the only case where a shark or heavy knurl genuinely earns its place. The rear of the barrel carries less of the mass, the fingers are further from the balance point, and the extra hold buys you control over the dart's attitude without the front finger fighting it.
A useful test: throw twenty darts, then look at where the coating is going bright. That's your hand position, measured by the barrel itself. Buy a cut that lives in that zone and leave the rest of the barrel alone.
Coatings and what wears first
Most coloured barrels are coated tungsten — a thin surface layer applied over the machined blank. Black, blue and gold finishes are the common ones. The coating is measured in microns and it is thinner than any of the cut depths in the table above, which tells you what happens next.
The coating goes first on whatever sticks out furthest. Knurl peaks and shark tooth edges are the highest points on the barrel and they get abraded by every throw, every board strike and every rattle in the wallet. Expect visible brightening on an aggressively cut coated barrel within a season of regular play, and expect it to appear as a band exactly where you hold it.
This is cosmetic until it isn't. A worn shark cut loses its steep face before it loses its depth, which means the grip goes softer and less directional over time — the barrel you've spent six months learning is quietly turning into a different barrel. Uncoated tungsten avoids the problem entirely by having nothing to lose. It just goes grey.
If you buy coated and aggressive, buy two sets or accept that the grip is a consumable. If you want a cut to stay the same for years, buy uncoated, or buy micro.
Matching cut to how you actually release
- Fingers dry, release clean, darts group but you want more feel: micro cut. Adds locating texture without adding hold.
- Fingers sweat under pressure and the dart occasionally squirts: ring or knurl. Enough hold to survive moisture without going directional.
- You throw with a pronounced pull-back before the push: avoid shark. The steep face will catch on the way back.
- You throw pure forward push with no backward drag: shark is available to you and nobody else. Use it if you need the hold.
- Your darts fly nose-up and you suspect a late release: go shallower, not deeper. A cut that holds is a cut that releases late.
- You keep dropping darts out of the hand between throws: that's a hand-dryness problem, not a barrel problem. Solve it with a towel before you solve it with a purchase.
- You have no idea: ring cut, 0.20 mm, mid-barrel. It is the safest thing on any shop wall and it is why half the shop wall is ring cut.
Testing a barrel in the shop in ninety seconds
Ask to hold one. Every reputable shop will let you, and the ones that won't are telling you something.
Take it in your throwing grip, exactly where your fingers would sit, and check first that the cut is under all three or four fingers rather than under two of them. Then roll it slowly between thumb and forefinger and feel whether the texture is continuous or whether you're crossing zone boundaries.
Next, tip the barrel forward as if releasing and let the fingers open. It should leave the hand without hesitation. Any snag at all is a barrel that will change your release under pressure, and the shop floor is a much cheaper place to discover that than a league night.
Last, look at the length and where the cut sits relative to the balance. On a torpedo or bomb-shaped barrel the mass is forward of the middle, and a grip zone placed behind that mass will feel unstable in the hand however good the cut is. Cut quality and cut placement are separate questions and only one of them is printed on the box.
