What Weight Darts Should You Use? Stamped Barrel Weight vs Bench-Weighed Assembled Weight

Most adults settle between 21 g and 24 g stamped, but that stamp is not the dart. In steel-tip it covers the barrel and its point only; add a shaft and flight and the assembled mass lands 0.6-2.0 g higher. Soft-tip stamps the complete dart, so a 22 g soft-tip and a 22 g steel-tip barrel are roughly a gram and a half apart before you throw anything.

Start at 22 g stamped if you're steel-tip and you have nothing to go on. It's the middle of the range, it's the most heavily stocked weight in every shop, and it gives you room to move either way. That's the short answer and it's a decent one.

The longer answer is that the number stamped on a steel-tip barrel measures a different object from the number stamped on a soft-tip dart. Steel-tip: the mass of the barrel with its point, shaft and flight excluded. Soft-tip: the mass of the complete dart, tip and all. Nobody puts an asterisk on the box. So a player moves from a machine league to a steel board, buys 22 g because 22 g is what they threw, and ends up with a projectile roughly a gram and a half heavier than the one they'd built their throw around.

Neither figure is the one that governs how the dart leaves your hand. That's the assembled mass — everything screwed together, on the scale, in one piece — and it is published by nobody.

  1. What the number on the box is actually weighing

    In steel-tip, the stamp covers the metal you hold. On a fixed-point dart the point is pressed into the barrel and never comes out, so the stamped figure includes it whether the packaging says so or not. On a moveable or replaceable-point system, the barrel and the point are separate items and the stamp usually refers to the pair as sold — but swap a 32 mm point for a 41 mm one and you've added a couple of tenths of a gram that nothing on the packet accounts for.

    In soft-tip, the stamp is the whole dart as supplied: barrel, moulded plastic tip, shaft, flight. Change the shaft and you've changed the number. Most soft-tip sets ship with a short nylon shaft and a slim flight precisely because the manufacturer is working against a machine-league weight ceiling that steel-tip players never think about.

    There's a third convention that muddies it further. Some barrels are stamped to the nearest whole gram and manufactured to a tolerance of roughly ±0.1 g per barrel within a set. Put three barrels from a nominal 22 g set on a 0.01 g scale and you'll typically find 21.94, 22.01 and 22.07. That spread is normal and it is not a defect. It also means the difference between a 22 g and a 23 g set is smaller than the difference some players imagine they can feel.

  2. Bench figures: what a 22 g barrel leaves the table at

    Every figure below is built on the same reference: a 22.0 g stamped steel-tip barrel, 50 mm long, with a 32 mm exposed point already included in that 22.0 g. Only the shaft and flight change. Read the last column as the mass of the actual object you throw.

    Find the shaft and flight you actually use, then read across to see what your nominally 22 g darts really weigh in the air.

    The spread is 1.36 g across the table. The same stamped barrel leaves the bench anywhere between 22.6 g and 24.0 g depending on the back end, which is a bigger difference than the one between a 22 g set and a 23 g set. Change your shafts from short nylon to long aluminium and you have effectively bought a heavier dart without buying a dart.

    This is the single most useful thing on the page. Before you decide the barrel weight is wrong, work out whether the back end has been quietly moving underneath you. Players who lose a set of aluminium shafts and replace them with nylon on a Tuesday night are throwing a measurably different dart on the Wednesday.

  3. Stamped to assembled, across the whole range

    Lightest realistic build is extra-short nylon with a slim flight. Heaviest is long aluminium with a 150 micron standard. Typical is medium nylon with a standard 100 micron flight, which is what most sets ship with and what most players never change.

    Cross-code players should read the right-hand column: it tells you what number a soft-tip box would print for the same physical dart, which is the comparison the packaging refuses to make for you.

    Look at what that last column exposes. A steel-tip 18 g barrel assembles to roughly the same total mass as the heaviest legal soft-tip dart in most machine leagues. Everything above 18 g stamped has no soft-tip equivalent at all. A player who says they "throw 22s" in a machine league and "22s" on the steel board is throwing two darts about a gram and a half apart, and blaming the change of board for something the scale would have explained in ten seconds.

  4. The legal ceilings, which almost nobody is anywhere near

    Steel-tip weight limits are set so high they're irrelevant to a shopping decision. Soft-tip limits are not, and they're the ones people fall foul of.

  5. Picking a band by how you throw

    Weight interacts with your throw shape, not with your ability. A heavier dart needs more push and arrives flatter; a lighter dart needs less push and arrives on more of an arc. Neither is better. What matters is whether the dart is asking your arm to do something it doesn't naturally do.

    Work in assembled mass, not stamped mass, and use the previous tables to convert.

    Identify your throw shape first, then buy into the matching band — going the other way round means rebuilding your throw to suit a purchase.

    One opinion, plainly: if you're inside 21-24 g assembled and your grouping is poor, the weight is not your problem. Chasing grams inside that band is the most common way players spend money without improving. Balance point and grip cut will do more for you than a gram either way.

  6. Balance Grade, and why two 22 g darts feel different

    Put two 22 g stamped barrels on a knife-edge and they'll often balance in different places. Balance Grade is the balance point expressed as a percentage of total assembled length measured from the tip — so a lower number means the mass sits further forward.

    Typical assembled steel-tip darts grade somewhere between about 37% and 47%. Front-graded darts sit nose-down in the board and reward a pushed release. Rear-graded darts want more of a lift and tend to fly nose-up. Two barrels of identical mass can be four or five percentage points apart because one is a straight, evenly-distributed cylinder and the other is a torpedo with the mass bunched behind the point.

    This is why the weight question is only half the question. A player who throws well with front-loaded darts and keeps buying by the gram figure alone will keep landing on rear-graded barrels and keep concluding their technique has gone. It hasn't.

  7. Testing a weight change without buying anything

    Two cheap experiments before you spend money.

    First, change the back end. Swap medium nylon shafts for short nylon and you've taken about 0.3 g off the assembled mass and moved the balance forward. Swap them for long aluminium and you've added about 0.7 g and moved it back. A packet of shafts costs a fraction of a set of barrels and tells you which direction you want to travel in.

    Second, borrow. Any league night has half a dozen sets on the table and most players will happily let you throw nine darts with theirs. Do it, then find out what they're stamped and what shafts and flights are on them, and write it down. Nine darts won't tell you if a set is right, but twenty sets of nine darts will tell you which direction feels wrong, and that's the more useful information.

  8. Where the received wisdom falls down

    "Heavier darts are more stable." Not by themselves. A heavier dart carries more momentum, so a given amount of release error deflects it less — but a heavier dart also amplifies any inconsistency in how hard you push it. Stability comes from a repeatable release, and mass only helps once that release exists.

    "Start at 24 g and work down." This one gets repeated a lot and there's nothing behind it. Starting in the middle at 22 g gives you room in both directions; starting at the heavy end means every adjustment goes the same way and you learn nothing about the other half of the range.

    "Pros throw around 24 g, so that's the sweet spot." Barrel weights across serious players span most of the commercial range, and the ones at the top of it usually got there by drifting up over years, not by choosing it. Copying a number without copying the throw that produced it is how the same players end up with four unused sets in a drawer.

    The one piece of received wisdom that does hold: buy the barrel last. Work out your throw shape, get the setup geometry right, sort your shafts and flights, and only then start moving grams. The barrel is the most expensive thing to get wrong and the last thing that should be varying.
